Funny Things People Say

Usually other people, perfect strangers, are more than kind to me. Without fail, someone offers to help me as I put the wheelchair in or take it out of the car. I hardly have to wait for a fellow shopper to ask to reach the tomato paste or green onions. Little children will hold doors and ask to carry things.

But, on the rare occasion, someone will say something to me that seems so unfiltered and ridiculous, I wonder if he or she is home at night asking, "Why on earth did I say that today?". I'm not easily offended by the comments...usually I can barely restrain myself from bursting with laughter.

While driving through the most wonderful drive through ever, Starbucks, the boy who handed me my grande iced coffee, who was all of about seventeen, asked me what the hand control in my car was. More specifically he asked, "What is that thing, a motorcycle throttle?". Initially, I tried to wrap my brain around why someone would think I would have a motorcycle throttle in my car, but just moved on and very nicely told him I was paralyzed and it was a control, connected to the gas and brake pedals, to help me drive. He pensively looked at me, paused briefly, and said, "Well, I have eczema if that makes you feel any better." I responded with, "put some lotion on it," and drove away dying of laughter. The kind that doesn't stop and keeps creeping up all evening. See, everyone has problems, no matter the size.

  4. Hi Sarah,
My name is Jodi. I live in New Zealand on the other side of the world. So often use the internet to feel connected to more people (out of my country's 4.5 million) who share something in common with me. I read Kelle Hampton's blog because 18 months ago I gave birth to a wee girl with down syndrome. I came across Kelle's blog and like you poured myself into it, reading every post. Her Nella was born almost exactly a year before my girl. The day I first went to her blog it was Nella's first birthday post. To see Kelle celebrate and have fun gave me so much hope and excitement that my life could be great too (even thought at the time I wanted to run away and hide).Anyhow I digress slightly. Because the point I wanted to make is your letter to her is beautiful and sums up a lot of how I feel about Kelle's blog, but also is a tribute to your strength and incredible struggle. I wanted you to know that maybe you will be someones Kelle, and inspire them to write a blog that will help someone and the cycle will continue. And isn't that a great legacy. Look forward to adding you to my must read list :)

  6. new visitor from kelle's blog. This is such a funny story. "See, everyone has problems, no matter the size." So true. I remember when I first had my son, he was a CRYER - all newborns cry but he was a true high maintenance baby and things would just get him all worked up. I remember thinking, you have such an easy life, how could you be so upset all the time? Then our pediatrician said to me once, "every new pain he feels, however small to us, is the worst pain he has experienced in his whole life, however new." Pain, experiences, they are all relative, and we can try to measure and stack them up against each other, but each person can only truly understand the worst that they have ever experienced.

Things like, "Oh, my aunt died from breast cancer," or "I knew someone who couldn't walk and lost her sight because of MS." People are funny!

  48. Dear Sarah,
I've just read your letter to Kelle and jumped to your blog. Your story moved me, but more than that, I love the way you, just like Kelle, want to expand your heart, reach out to others, stop fighting against and start/keep fighting for. I love the way you send bitterness to hell for your sake and for others' sake. You're right, so right! We all have assets and failures, right? I do too, and like you both I put up my own personal fight. We all do. The fights are all different and hardship has only one possible upside: the possibility to become a better person. Comparing destinies can only bring selfsih feelings of pride or jealousy, but sharing them...Sharing them is damn awesome and can bring so much support and inspiration. I'll be happy to check on your blog and read about the beautiful person you are! :)

  50. Yup, you guessed it, I found you through kelle's blog too! Good on you for starting this, I have two kids with a disability, my daughter has down syndrome and I recently adopted a little boy who has DS too, so I know a bit about the world of disability and the inappropriate things people can say, but I too have learnt to laugh!
Have you heard of Eric Leipoldt? He is a disability activist and he has done some interesting work. I read recently in one of his research projects about how disability teaches us about inter-dependence, that we all like to think we are independent but we are not, that actually we should accept we are all dependent on one another, and that having a disability teaches us about this. Hope this makes some sense....you sound wonderful and I too look forward to reading more!

  51. First day of my new wheelie employee and we're in the kitchen. I'm getting a couple of dishes down from the overhead cupboards and handed her a mug with 'just keep walking' written on it. I nearly died, she laughed at me and told everyone. It was hilarious. Later on I stick myself down deeper when I told her to just walk in to see me in my office whenever she needed me.

  52. Another friend from Kelle's blog. I am looking forward to following your blog. As a coach of a wheelchair tennis team, I heard these stories like yours often. I used to be so careful what I would say, making sure to not use the words walk or run but now, with so many friends in a chair, we just talk...and laugh.

  53. New reader here who has been "almost" deaf all of my life! I've worn hearing aids since I was 6 years old and have hated them every day since then. I, too, am classified as "handicapped" but the only handicap I have are the things I LET myself refrain from doing - because there really should not be a thing I cannot do, in spite of my hearing loss. So I'm going to follow along and laugh with you on all of the challenges and happiness, ups and downs that life can throw at us! Found you through Kelle Hampton, and Lord knows we can use more inspiring blogs like hers - and I have no doubt you are up to the task! Carry on, girlfriend................... :-) We are here to get to know you, and CHEER YOU ON!!! XOXO

Thank you for writing to Kelle so that we were able to find you. I could not wait to come over to your blog after reading her blog. I have to say I love to see photos and hope that you will post some of yourself/life in your area. Your post made me laugh out loud, I am one that finds myself saying something and then hours later thinking about what was said and thinking Oh wow did I really say that or did they really say that. I also wish I was good at comebacks. You have been added to my favorites list.

  62. Wow, that is hysterical!

We are a blended family of different races, needs (some seen and some not seen), abilities, and well..we just look different! I am forever astonished at the things people say to us!

One of my favorites is "Which ones are *yours*?" As I continually say, emphatically, "They are ALL mine" the questioner become more and more frustrated and annoyed that I won't reveal to them the juicy little secret of whom I do not share genes with.

    Silly people!

  84. Hi Sarah,

Like everyone else, I found your blog through Kelle. I just wanted to tell you how much I admire your beauty, determination and strength. Because of those things, girl, you've got so much livin' to do! My dad was paralyzed in a football accident at the age of 17. There is a story about him from the hospital that the doctors became frustrated with his positive outlook and was afraid he was in denial. They sent a psychiatrist in who laid it all out on the line for him, asking him if he understood that he will never walk again. He look at the doctor and asked "What do you want me to do? Cry?". Reading your story, and knowing my dads story, I am amazed at how strong you both are, and at such a young age what you've already overcome and accomplished. It takes my breath away.

When/If you have time, I would love for you to check out the video that was made for him last year when he was awarded with the Alumni Award by his highschool, Richmond High. You can see that throughout his life, he's truly lived every moment to the fullest. I'm not trying to brag about my dad, but just hoping that this gives you inspiration that everything you laid out that you want for your life - you can totally accomplish and do. The video includes a short clip from my wedding where we did an adaptive dance for our father/daugher dance. I am going to attach the link to the full video as well because WHEN you get married some day, you may want to do something like this too. It was a blast!

Thank you for sharing your story, your raw emotion and a sneak peek into your life. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or just want to say hi. Best of luck to you!

Can't wait to read more!!

  95. Ohhh girlie- all you can do is laugh sometimes :) I am not paralyzed- I have stage iv breast cancer and have heard some pretty fabulously funny things over time. I completely get its hard for people to know what to say and I just try to assure them- there is no right or wrong- its all good (and sometimes ridiculously funny!)

  101. That is hilarious!! The innocence of youth! So much better than an awkward sympathetic response though huh?! Your blog is inspirational, so glad you began putting your heart into words. Beck xx

  103. Oh my! I'm not sure if I'm laughing because the comparison is so ludicrous OR because I remember being 'that' clueless of a teen. Regardless, no matter how ridiculous his comment was (and it WAS) you had one of 2 choices....let it make you bitter and respond in that manner OR respond exactly like you did! I'm not sure I could have or would have taken the high road you did! Great post, I linked from kelle :)
